Our Sleeping Bag Accompanies Iditarod Puppies
Looking for a great sleeping bag? “I LOVE the sleeping bag,” wrote Sue Allen about Northern Outfitters’ -30 Expedition-Weight Sleeping Bag. Sue, an expert on the dogsled circuit, was off on an adventure with a yearling dogsled team and wrote us about her new bag. “It’s like having a tent,” she said. Her favorite features are the foam pad on the bottom, its spaciousness and, when packing for the road, “it stuffs down to less than my old North Face bag.” Actually, it compresses down to 24 X 10.5 inches and 6.5 pounds and is wind resistant and water repellant with a hooded top to provide maximum warmth and minimum exposure.

Dean Partridge Bags Boone & Crockett Muskox in Northern Outfitters Gear
"During the preparation of our bow-hunt for Barren Ground Muskox in Canada's Arctic, Nunavut, I knew there were several challenges we would face unique to the region that we had not experienced before. The brutal cold conditions would only make them more challenging, and while good gear is always important, it is seldom that your as reliant on your clothing as you are in the Arctic.
“I will never forget just before we left, speaking with Jim Harrison of Northern Outfitters. When I mentioned to him the current temperature where we were headed was -50C, I think he could tell the concern in my voice however his only reply was, "Trust our gear, Dean, it will keep you warm". His word proved true as the complete Arctic System kept us comfortable for the entire duration of the trip on the days it was -20C as well as on the days it dipped to and below -50C.
“From start to finish of the hunt, long nights spent in Igloos, and long days covering miles in a komatik, cold was completely removed from the equation by the Northern Outfitters gear letting us focus on the task at hand, harvesting a Boone and Crockett Muskox with the bow! Thank you Northern Outfitters."

We just received this from the UK:
Jim,
Received the pants and liner Thursday. Fantastic service. I can't get my local newsagent to deliver newspapers that quick and efficiently. Fantastic.
I obviously tried them on immediately, and well, they fit like a glove - with just plenty of places to adjust to a perfict fit.
I have yet to get outside in truly awful UK weather...as soon as I do I will be out there with the dogs testing them out. So far, they have been comfortable and warm, indoors and outdoors, and not too hot, just toasty.
Thanks again for the fantastic service.
Greg

Hello,
I don't know how we ever made films in sub zero temperatures before Northern Outfitters came along. I admittedly was skeptical when I first saw the boots and outfit, but I now know that it would be impossible to be in subzero conditions for 10-12 hours a day without your products to keep us warm, flexible and dry...
What a great product... an academy award should be forthcoming...
Best Regards,
Peter G.

I wanted to let you know that your gear improved my race. This system is truly amazing. I raced both the Copper Basin 300 and the Iditarod in your gear. The 50 below CB 300 was obviously what proved to me what a quality product it is. Iditarod was no walk in the park this year either and I was confident in N.O. when others where freezing their ass off. No more multiple layers. I will surely be ordering some additional gear for next season.I have a few comments after wearing the stuff for basically 4 months straight: - it's amazing that it doesn't smell worse! - love the suspenders, easiest system for a woman to pee. But it is a challenge to tuck the back pants flap back under the top if you don't unzip top. - why are the pant legs so short or are my legs really that long? - Is there any way N.O. Gear won't make me look 250 pounds? (Kidding!) Aliy Zirkle |

I don't think taking a whole 1/2 hour to pick and ship my order is fast enough.
You really have to speed things up. Seriously, wow, I don't think I have ever seen that quick a response.
I've had longer wait times on a meal in a restaurant.
Thanks for the great service!

This past week all the U.S. athletes merged to the tracks at the 10th Mountain Division Biathlon Center in Fort Kent, Maine for the U.S. National Championships. All of the top athletes in the U.S. made their way to the northern most point in Maine for a three race series. For many it's a chance to show yourself against the World Cup athletes. The first race was a sprint race with a total ski distance of 7.5 kilometers and two shooting stages. Lanny shot well with only one penalty and Tracy followed her with 2 penalties. They were both edged out by Susan Dunklee of Vermont in a surprise finish for her. Lanny placed 2nd and Tracy 3rd. The second race was a pursuit with athletes starting in the order in which they finished the day before in the sprint and only separated by 5 seconds and 4 shooting stages. Both Lanny and Tracy powered their way around the difficult course and on to a sweep for them. Tracy had an amazing result hitting 20 for 20 targets and skiing her way to a 2 minute lead over the rest of the field. Lanny only missed 2 of 20 shots and came in second also with a huge lead over the rest of the field. The final race was a mass start in which all the athletes start in a wave together. Lanny sat out the mass start, but Tracy cruised to another National Championship title missing only 1 out of 20 targets and toping the field by 3:30 minutes. The Twins performances this week reaffirmed their dominance in the U.S. as top contenders for the Olympic Team next year in 2010. Both Lanny and Tracy will now travel to Quebec City, Canada for the final week of racing and the Canadian National Championships.
Thanks Northern Outfitters for supplying our Northern Outfitters Parka and Vaetrex liners, we were warm and dry for the entire competition.

Thank you for putting up with my boot issues and solving them. I only had two runs in cooler (below zero) weather with the new Mountain Pack Boot before the snow disappeared, but they did keep my feet warm and I had no trouble keeping them on my weird feet. Your customer service is OUTSTANDING and I will not hesitate to recommend your boots to others. Thanks again...........

Hello Jim,
I just wanted to say thanks again for the incredible products and cold weather gear. The Mountain boots and Vætrex clothing has been a solid, flawless part of my clothing system for the last several years and it keeps me warm and dry. The fact that I don’t have to worry about trying to stay warm or dry myself out on trail, gives me more time to care for my dogs and get rest. These are key ingredients to my success in racing and will help me continue to improve in the future. I wear the Northern Outfitters logo proudly and am happy to have your Company as a part of our team.
This past weekend we raced in the Klondike 300 Race out of Knik, Alaska and the temperatures dropped to -30˚ f along the river at night and warmed up to 0 f during the day. My gear once again performed excellent and kept me comfortable from start to finish. Thanks again for the awesome products and we are looking forward to the Iditarod coming up in a few weeks.

I want to thank Northern Outfitters for their super gear. In all of my years of travel in Alaska’s arctic regions, I have used many different types of winter gear apparel for my expeditions. Not until I found Northern Outfitters did I really get the cold weather protection that I’ve been looking for. Your Expedition Arctic Parka is by far one of the warmest and most comfortable that I have ever worn. The Arctic Boots are the warmest and most comfortable out there. Last year I traveled from Fairbanks to Barrow in blistering conditions with temperatures reaching well below -60°F and I stayed warm and toasty during our 20-day winter trek thanks to you. Thank you Northern Outfitters for your awesome gear. I definitely will not trade my Arctic system for anything else!

"Jim, I am sending this Email in appreciation of a great product. I purchased your Arctic System for use on a polar Bear hunt in March/April of 2007. I was at first very skeptical that this gear could be THAT effective, and when I read that is most effective worn against the skin. (NAKED AT -40 ????????) I had to call and talked to your sales people who assured me that all the claims were true. The weather was pretty much -25 to -30 daytime temps (I had a pocket thermometer) with constant 10 to 40 mph wind. I NEVER got cold as long as I was fully suited up. We spent up to 12 - 14 hours a day glassing for Bears with very little activity and still I was very comfortable. Several times we took walks further out over the ice. This was very difficult going as the wind and ocean had piled the ice into 5 to 50 foot piles 2-3 miles wide, because of the effort required to climb through the ice you would work up a real sweat. I had always heard that working up a sweat was the first NO-No of Arctic survival. The Experts need to rewrite that rule with this vatrex gear you could feel the sweat tricking down your back during hard exertion, but when you slowed down in a short time you would feel dry again without EVER feeling cold. The only time that was uncomfortable was when I was out of my gear in my sleeping bag. I am planning a trip back to the Arctic in the 2008 - 2009 season. You can bet I will be using your gear again and this time your companies Sleeping Bag!! Thanks Again."

"I love my Northern Outfitters Mountain Pack Boots! I'm now teaching in the Alaskan bush and they are very appropriate! Nothing keeps my feet warm like Northern Outfitters. I can even put my cold feet in these boots and my frozen toes will warm up instantly. Thank you for an excellent product!Jolene Kinsland

"Thanks for sponsoring Martin Buser in the Iditarod. I know he loves your cold weather gear, so my next winter parka will be Northern Outfitters!!

"Jim, I own a number of Northern Outfitter's products, but the ones that I like best and the ones that most people comment to me about are my Arctic Boots.....and when I tell them how great they are they want a pair...........some even want mine!! I was in a store recently and I noticed a lady looking at my Arctic Boots. When she asked how they performed, I told her "I wear them with NO SOCKS!!" As you told me, I'm a true Minnesotan, but I still like my feet to be warm at -15F.

After 21 days living with the Inuit on the ice of the Arctic Ocean, sleeping in a canvas tent and riding on a dog sled, I now know “brutal” cold. The warmest day was 22° below zero. Every other day, the temperature hovered between -30 to -40°. Thank you Northern Outfitters. Thank you. Without your gear... well, I don’t even want to think of that.
Hartmut W. Koelsch (Longmont, Colorado) -
Your gear held up superbly on my most recent dog trip: 14 days, 350+ miles crossing the Brooks Range from Bettkesd to the Arctic slope and back.
On our way back on the John River, we got on thin ice and I slid headlong onto two feet deep water. The temperature was -10° F and windy. I felt a gush of ice water through my boots and pants while wading in the water to ""unbundle"" the dogs. My boot shells and pants froze solid... However, almost miraculously, my feet and legs remained warm, although damp. we kept going and I wore my boots and pants for nine more hours until we arrived at the homestead on Crevice Creek.
This stuff really works!

On April 17, 2000, I became the first person to fly an open cockpit aircraft to the geographic North Pole. That accomplishment was in large part due to your EXP suit. I experienced temperatures in excess of 48° below zero, with wind chills of -190°. Your EXP suit not only kept me alive, but I was functional enough to use solar navigation when my GPS display froze. The Inuite people of the Arctic named me “Tough Walrus” for my seemingly limitless resistance to the cold. That compliment should go to the EXP suit. Your EXP suit made my record-breaking flight possible.

Sets Iditarod Course Record Wearing New Northern Outfitters Pack Boots
(2000) Anchorage, Alaska – For the third time in the last five years, Doug Swingley and his sled dog team have won the Alaskan Iditarod championship. And for the second time, Swingley set a new course record. Northern Outfitters played the important role of keeping Doug Swingley warm and comfortable during the race. “Swingley’s impressive finish in this year’s race is significant for us because he was wearing a brand new pack boot we had introduced just this year,” said Fred Gonzales, president of Northern Outfitters. “The new Mountain Pack Boot is designed to be easier to run in than our Expedition Boot, which Swingley wore in previous years.”
In 2001, Doug Swingley did it again by winning the Alaskan Iditarod championship wearing Northern Outfitters gear.

My wife and I are recreational dog mushers and have used your gear daily. It wasn't put through the test until I entered the Knik long distance run. I won the Red Lantern Award for placing last to come in.
Well into this race we hit extreme temperatures the fell below 10° (and that does not even take into consideration the wind chill factor). The EXP system was extremely warm and we were able to take two-hour naps beside our dog teams in the sub-zero temperatures. A person could break into a sweat while running up hills and working with the dogs, then jump back onto the runners and stay warm and dry throughout the trip.
Thanks again for specializing and providing such high quality products.

Northern Outfitters did it again! You’ve made a product for outdoor enthusiasts that is better than anything on the market. The ultimate boot is finally made. Your new Mountain Pack Boot is more flexible, comfortable and lighter than any previous model I have ever tried. I used the new boot during the whole Iditarod Dog Sled Race. I never changed the liners and I stayed warm and comfortable all the way. Not only does the new boot feel great, it looks great, too. This boot will keep anybody warm—anywhere!

Once again, the choice for Iditarod Races is Northern Outfitters' Expedition Wear! It gives comfort I need so that I can concentrate on my team.
Nate Haskell, Videographer (Georgia Outdoors)
The conditions in Saskatchewan late November and early December of 1995 were extremely varied. The temperature ranged from 30° to - 20° F, and at times, blizzard conditions with heavy snowfall. I was amazed at the comfort level with that wide a range of temperatures. We sat in a four by eight hutch for twelve days under these extremes. With the Northern Outfitters' clothing, the wait was so much easier.

Our Alaskan journey turned out to be a very cold and wet video shoot. The water resistant outer shell and the fleece lining of the hoodie saved us from a lot of discomfort and made our trip extremely comfortable. The hoodie and all of the Northern Outfitters' line of clothing that I have put to the test have proven time and time again that there is no better cold weather clothing made.

In our recent North Pole Skydiving Expedition, there were three groups of people. The American Group, was equipped with your EXP suits. A European group was equipped with experimental suits made by a well-known national company. The third group was Russian, dresses in surplus military gear. As people got cold, they volunteered to leave on the next flight. At the end, after 8 hours on the pole, jumpers in Northern Outfitters suits were the only ones left. I can think of no greater statement on warmth and comfort of your gear.
Charley Caffey (Fairbanks, Alaska)
I am an avid hunter and use my snowmachine a lot in the winter. I bought a pair of your boots and mittens. The temperature during the winter in Fairbanks ranges from a warm day of -20° to the extreme cold of -80°. I was out on my snowmachine driving in temperatures -65 and not once were my feet or hands cold!
Joe B. Owen (U.S. Marshall)
I have just returned from a Whitetail Hunt in Northern Saskatchewan, Canada where temperatures were as low as -28° F. I have your Northern Outfitters complete Cold Weather Gear [EXP Series] and I want you to know I stayed completely warm. There were six hunters in camp and I was the only one that had warm feet at all times. I cannot say enough good things about the gear.
Peter Shaw (Foristell, Missouri)
I just returned from a successful hunt in the Arctic Circle. I spent 13 days on the Arctic ocean in ice storms, high winds and - 50°. My EXP system performed miraculously. I was never cold and, in fact, my guides (natives of the area) got cold when I did not. Your Storm Mountain sleeping bag kept me hot at night! I cannot compliment your equipment any higher: It is the BEST.
